Uniting for Health: The Role of Communication in Driving Change
By Kerry Sease, MD, MPH
Executive Director, Institute for the Advancement of Community Health
How we talk about community health has never been more important. Ongoing debates around healthcare and public health policy have underscored the need for clear communication that resonates across party lines. At the same time, our collective responsibility to address health disparities and promote health equity remains as pressing as ever. This is why the IACH’s eighth annual Community Health Forum is more critical than ever.
This forum brings together a multidisciplinary group of leaders, healthcare professionals, non-profit professionals, policymakers, researchers and community partners—all focused on one common goal: improving health outcomes and addressing the health disparities that continue to affect our communities. But the success of this forum, and of the initiatives we discuss, hinges on our ability to communicate effectively and respectfully, especially in a time of division. How we discuss community health, and how we engage different communities in these discussions, plays a significant role in whether we can make meaningful, lasting change.
We must focus on the shared values that unite us. Health is a fundamental issue that touches every person. A healthy community benefits everyone—whether it’s through lower healthcare costs, a more productive workforce, or simply the joy of seeing our children grow up in a thriving environment. This is not a political issue; it’s a shared human need.
When discussing community health, it’s easy to get bogged down in the language of “costs” and “spending.” But we must reframe these discussions to highlight how investments in health lead to broader societal benefits. Addressing health disparities and ensuring access to care and health promoting opportunities are not just moral imperatives—they are smart investments in our future. Reducing chronic illness, improving early childhood development and promoting mental health can have long-term economic benefits for our state while also creating a healthier, more sustainable community for all.
The IACH Community Health Forum is part of a two-day series, Building Brighter Futures Through Community Health Innovations, that includes the Desmond P Kelly MD Nurturing Developing Minds Conference hosted by the Institute for Child Success. These events provide an opportunity to come together, share strategies and discuss how we can improve communication around community health to ensure everyone thrives. By framing our conversations around shared values, reframing health as a long-term investment, making the issues relatable, centering stories, and creating space for community-driven solutions, we can drive meaningful change.
We hope you will join us February 27 and 28 for this important dialogue, where we can work together to improve health outcomes for everyone and build a future where all individuals have the opportunity to thrive.
