Update to students from Academic Affairs

Dear Students,

Today’s official move to remote learning will bring with it challenges, some of which may seem especially difficult to navigate. Please take advantage of available resources as you manage these challenges. As you adjust to a new academic setting and a new way of learning, we want to reassure you that the same campus offices that provide additional support to students when in-person classes are in session remain available to you even though you are away from campus.

Center for Academic Success

The staff members in the Center for Academic Success are ready to help you achieve successful outcomes in your courses through academic coaching on time management, general study skills training, and syllabus mapping. They are also ready to help you adjust your approach to studying and learning as you face an unexpected transition to a new learning environment.

If you are currently connected to one of our staff members in the center, you may continue to communicate with that individual by email, phone, or video conference about your academic progress.

If you feel that you would benefit from a connection to a staff member in the center, please email Ms. Davis (

Peer tutoring

Our peer tutoring program will continue through video conference. Please contact Ms. Davis ( if you feel that you would benefit from sessions with a peer tutor. This service is free for all Furman students.

In addition, you might find this compilation of tips and resources and these Zoom tips for students helpful.

Writing and Media Lab

The Writing and Media Lab will have student consultants available to help with writing via video conferencing, phone, or email. Students who need help with a written assignment can schedule an online writing consultation on the Writing and Media Lab website. Writing help will be appointment-only at first, but we plan to make virtual drop-in times available. If you have any questions about writing support, email Ms. Schwab (

SOAR Office

If you have academic accommodations in place for your current courses, those accommodations apply to a remote learning environment.

As always, you should maintain open lines of communication with your professors about your accommodations, especially if you have questions about how they might be affected by remote learning.

The SOAR office remains in operation and can address any accommodation needs that you may have.

Please review these materials and contact Ms. Bagley ( if you have any questions.

We hope you will explore this helpful Student Guide to Library Resources and Services During COVID-19 Pandemic. For help with research, send a message anytime to or text 864-214-7172.

Remember that you can always reach out to your academic advisor, who can help you navigate the resources that are available.

Pre-registration for the fall 2020 semester is right around the corner, though the process will be slightly delayed. Be on the lookout for communication from your academic advisor.

Finally, if you find the transition to remote learning to be more difficult to manage than you were expecting, or if you find that it adds stress and anxieties that impact your academic performance, we encourage you to make use of the spectrum of non-academic support services that Furman offers. Please consult this extensive communication from the Office of Student Life for specific details.

This is certainly not how we thought this semester would unfold, and we commend you for your flexibility and adeptness in the face of challenging circumstances. Your professors have worked hard to make this transition as seamless as possible, but there will certainly be hiccups. Thanks for your continued patience and flexibility—with yourself, with your student colleagues, and with your professors—as we all work to adjust to the new academic reality of this semester.

We are hopeful that with our collective work and effort we can look back on this as a time that pushed us and as a time in which we all helped each other out in the face of the unexpected.

Please feel free to contact with any academic questions; we will do our best to get those routed to the appropriate offices and individuals as quickly as possible. And, please don’t forget to visit Furman’s COVID-19 site for updates and archived announcements.

We are in this together,

The Academic Affairs Team
