At Furman, we have a deferred recruitment process and first-year students are eligible to join in the spring semester of their first year. That means you’ll have a chance to find your academic and social niche before deciding whether or not you want to join a fraternity. When you’re ready to pursue membership in a fraternity, be sure to review the IFC Fraternity Recruitment process and guidelines.

Requirements

Each fraternity seeks out new members that best align with their respective organizational values and possess leadership potential, high academic standards, and a commitment to service.  That’s why we have requirements for participating in Fraternity and Sorority Life.  In order to be eligible to join a fraternity, each recruit must do the following:

  • Complete and pass at least 12 units recognized by Furman;
  • Possess a minimum GPA of 2.50, as established by the Interfraternity Council (individual chapters may have higher GPA requirements);
  • Complete the Interfraternity Council’s Recruitment registration form; and
  • Attend the IFC Recruitment Kickoff, Invitation Round, and Intention Round during Recruitment in January 2023.

Important Information for 2023-2024

Formal fraternity recruitment occurs during the fall semester (for returning and transfer students) and spring semester (all students, first opportunity for first-year students to join).

Spring 2024 Forman fraternity recruitment will occur the week of January 15-21, 2024. Although first-year students cannot join until the spring semester, there are many opportunities to meet members at events throughout the Fall semester.

Registration

All PNMs (Potential New Members) must register in advance to participate in recruitment. IFC recruitment registration for spring 2024 is now closed.

Recruitment Process

Most students participate in recruitment and join a fraternity in January of their first year; however, some students choose to join a fraternity as upperclassmen and can do so subsequent fall or spring semesters. Below is a general schedule of events that will occur during IFC Spring Recruitment, January 15-21, 2024

  • Recruitment Orientation –  The Interfraternity Council hosts this event and all five fraternities are represented. You’ll have a chance to learn more about the recruitment process as well as ask our fraternity leadership questions. Attire is casual and attendance is required for all men participating in recruitment.
  • Meet the Chapters Round – This is the first rounds of IFC Formal Recruitment where all potential new members (PNM) will visit each chapter that is participating in recruitment. PNMs will learn more about the respective fraternities, including organizational values, brotherhood/friendship, and the membership experience and expectations.
  • Brotherhood Round – This is the second round of IFC Recruitment where PNMs will visit all chapter to further their understanding of each chapter. The chapters will share one of the most important parts of being in a fraternity, brotherhood.
  • Invitation Round – This is an invite-only round, and recruits will receive invitations to join events based upon chapters’ interest in learning more about you. Each fraternity celebrates this round a little differently, and it’s a deeper showcase of fraternity membership.
  • Bid day – PNMs that have received an invitation(s) or bid(s) to join a fraternity will be notified. Upon bid acceptance, the new member will be introduced to the fraternity community.
