Location
Johns Hall – Johns Hall 101
Event Details
Presented by Dr. Jim Guth, the William R. Kenan, Jr., Professor of Politics and International Affairs. In 1973-74 Jim Guth taught Furman’s first course on the American Presidency, in the midst of the constitutional crisis of Watergate. He is teaching the course again this fall during Donald Trump’s concerted effort to redefine presidential authority. This lecture will consider the historical developments during that half-century that have shaped our understanding of that authority and how the Trump administration has exploited those developments—or challenged them—to augment presidential power. Although many Administration actions draw on long- standing practices and precedents, others embody novel assertions of power which—if implemented successfully—would present a fundamental challenge to the Constitution’s balance of powers.

American higher education faces many challenges. Will financial pressures change the mission of US colleges and universities? Is a liberal arts education valuable in our changed environment? Are college athletics doomed? Will AI eliminate the need for the traditional classroom? We will explore these questions and others with three top leaders in higher education, President Elizabeth Davis, Former Senator and Former University of Florida President Ben Sasse, and political theorist and President of the Heterodox Academy John Tomasi. Attendance is free but you must register as part of your Homecoming ticket. There is a no bag policy inside McAlister Auditorium for this event.
