Furman and Fall, What Could Be Better?

Introduction

Furman and its surroundings offer so many opportunities for Fall Fun. Some of my favorites are Paris Mountain drives, Swamp Rabbit Trail Walks, and going into Travelers Rest for good food. Furman’s campus is in the ideal spot to watch fall begin, being surrounded by forests and mountains give you the opportunity to watch the leaves and seasons change.

What To Do

As we enter October, the temperature is starting to drop to nice and cool brisk 50 degrees, and with the temperature dropping, we get to see the leaves change colors. One of my favorite spots to go and watch it happen firsthand is Paris Mountain. Just about a 5-to-10-minute drive away from campus is Altamont Drive, a road that navigates through Paris Mountain, you drive through the side of the mountain witnessing all the leaves change color with a beautiful view of Travelers Rest and Greenville. This 15-to-20-minute drive gives you a birds eye view of campus and its surroundings. My friends and I will take a drive if we need to clear our heads and get away from school, the best time to go is 10 minutes before sunset, so you can see it on the mountain.

The Swamp Rabbit Trail connects Travelers Rest to Downtown Greenville, some people use it to commute to and from work and the remaining tend to use it for recreational activities. The trail is connected to Furman’s campus about a 1/5 of the way from TR to Downtown. This 2-lane trail is used in Furman’s environmental and sustainability courses to show what Greenville does differently when it comes to sustainable actions. One of my favorite parts of the trail is where you can see the bell tower through the trees during sunset, the sun is behind you, so you get to see the sunshine on the tower and the rest of your surroundings.

Travelers Rest, or TR, offers some of the best small restaurant vibes and food you’ll ever have. With outdoor seating and warm drinks, spending a day in TR can be nice. If you want a coffee or pastry head to Tandem, need some pizza go to Sidewall, or even just need some warm soup or pho to feel warm head to Tru Broth. TR is just a 5-minute drive from campus with small shops and restaurants that will give you a small forest town vibe.

Furman in the fall has got to be one of my all-time favorite places, the colors, weather, and food are amazing and will make you feel right at home.
