English at Furman opens your mind to texts and films from around the world and gives you tools for interpreting them. You may encounter texts as varied as 14th-century English literature or slave narratives from the Americas. Then again, you might find yourself polishing professional writing skills, writing a screenplay or poem, critiquing a film, or crafting journalistic headlines. What is remarkable is the tremendous amount of time that faculty members spend with individual students, helping them to develop critical thinking and writing skills. The English major curriculum is broad and rich, and the department boasts a diverse and highly trained faculty who are prepared to challenge you to think and write at a high intellectual level.
