On-Campus Employment

F-1 and J-1 visa holders are eligible to work on-campus up to a maximum of 20 hours per week while classes are in session and more than 20 hours per week during academic breaks (such as winter break, spring break, or summer break). No special approval is needed for on-campus work within the weekly hours described above. F-1 and J-1 visa holders may work more than one on-campus jobs as long as they do not exceed the combined 20 hours per week while school is in session. Find a job.

Off-Campus Employment

Before engaging in experiential learning off-campus (i.e., interning, volunteering, student teaching, clinical, or job shadowing, etc.), F-1 and J-1 visa holders must first receive authorization from the Principal Designated School Official  (Dr. Akulli). For F-1 visa holders, the two types of authorization are Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or Optional Practical Training (OPT). J-1 visa holders will need to get approval from the Responsible Officer (Dr. Akulli) prior to engaging in activities related to their visa program designation beyond Furman University.

Curricular Practical Training

This work authorization allows F-1 students to gain practical experience in their major field of study prior to graduation

Optional Practical Training

This work authorization allows F-1 visa holders to work temporarily in the United States in a field related to their major after graduation.
