Curricular Practical Training (CPT) work authorization allows F-1 students to gain practical experience in their major field of study during their program of study. CPT is academically driven and the experience must be integral to student’s program of study.

Students in F-1 visa status must apply for and receive CPT authorization from the PDSO (Dr. Akulli) before engaging in any type of experiential learning, regardless whether the said experience is paid or unpaid. Common experiential learning may be in the form of an internship, volunteering, student teaching, research, clinicals, job shadowing, etc. Some of these experiences may be required by certain courses or degree programs. Students may be eligible for CPT approval after completing a minimum of one academic year at Furman University.
