Furman supports and celebrates first-generation college students from the time they arrive on campus to the time they graduate. We host a number of activities and events throughout the academic year, helping our first-gen students adjust to college life, connecting them with others in the first-gen community, and celebrating their accomplishments.
How do we define First-Gen?
Furman defines first-generation college students as those students for whom neither parent or guardian has earned a four-year college degree. 11% of the student body at Furman identifies as first-gen students.
We Are Proud to be Nationally Recognized For Our Efforts!

The FirstGen Forward organization is a collaborative effort across the entire higher education system – partnering with higher education, philanthropy, business, the public sector and others to catalyze first-generation student success in education, career and life.
