A student conduct record is any and all records received or created by the Office of Student Life in connection with a student misconduct complaint and any resulting conduct proceedings. The University maintains a file in the Office of Student Life for each student found responsible for a Student Conduct Code violation. Disciplinary records are protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and access to the file is determined by Furman’s student information release policy. Files for students are maintained for seven (7) years from the date of the student’s graduation from Furman University. However, if the student does not graduate from this institution, the student’s file will be maintained indefinitely.

Student conduct records are separate from a student’s transcript, which is maintained by Enrollment Services. For inquiries regarding a student’s transcript, please contact Enrollment Services at [email protected]. For violations of the Academic Integrity policy, contact the Associate Academic Dean for a student’s educational record at [email protected].

Remediation and amnesty do not create a student conduct record unless a subsequent violation occurs. As such, this information is not disclosed in disciplinary records checks without expressed permission from the student whose record has been requested.

Many programs and services, internal and external to the institution, may require student applicants to provide academic and conduct records as part of the application process. Interested parties can request a student conduct records check by submitting a request through one of the following forms:

  • Record Request Form: This form is for current and former students wishing to authorize release their disciplinary records to a third party such as graduate or professional schools, bar admissions committees, or employers. Current and former students seeking a student conduct records check for themselves can receive a Dean’s Certification letter as a result of completing this request. This letter will indicate any information regarding the date of an incident, associated Student Conduct Code charges (if found responsible), and action items a student may have been required to complete. External requests for student conduct records must be accompanied by a signed waiver from a current or former student indicating they have given permission for a particular institution or entity to have access to their student conduct records.
  • Institutional Conduct History Request Form: This form is used to request disciplinary history for current students. Campus partners often submit these requests to determine eligibility for programs such as study away, leadership positions, scholarships, or other University-sponsored opportunities.
