My earliest exposure to sustainability and environmental studies began after traveling to Israel at the age of 15 for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program. Curiosity sparked my enrollment in an Environmental Systems and Society (ESS) course, which turned out to be one of the best decisions I made as a kid. Before this, I had always dreamed of becoming an architect. However, my love for both environmentalism and architecture led me to shift my path slightly towards environmental landscape architecture, allowing me to combine both passions in my career. This is where my journey began, but… wait! You might be asking, who am I?

I’m Success T. Mulbah, a rising junior majoring in Sustainability Science with a minor in Data Analytics and I hail from Monrovia, Liberia. As mentioned earlier, my career goal is to become an Environmental Landscape Architect. This summer, I’m gaining valuable experience through an internship as an Environmental Engineer Fellow with the City of Greenville’s Engineering Department.

On my first day, I was sent into the field to test a park stream for any signs of pollution. This marked the beginning of a diverse range of tasks I’ve undertaken this summer. My responsibilities go beyond stream inspections. Lately, I’ve been assisting with documenting the locations of city-owned sewage pipes for the GIS committee’s mapping project. Additionally, I accompany city employees to meetings, which offer fantastic networking opportunities and insights into different career paths and the day-to-day realities of various positions.

As a city intern, my work plays a vital role. Stream inspections help prioritize problem areas and project implementation within the city limits. The collected data informs decisions about which issues require immediate mitigation and which projects deserve higher funding priority. The internship has provided me with immense knowledge, including an understanding of the city’s entire decision-making process. I love my internship because each day brings new opportunities for learning and growth. The chance to network and meet some amazing people makes it even more rewarding. Every second is a valuable experience. To learn more about the City of Greenville, visit: https://www.greenvillesc.gov/
