Homegoing

I recently read the incredible book Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi and it made me think so much about the value of trying to understand our lineage and where we came from even though many of those stories are forever lost. However, it IS possible to unearth and share some stories from the past that have not been told and as a result to become more complete through their telling. The reality is, there is much pain in the past and revisiting it can hurt and cause hurt. But, I truly believe that we must seek this more complete telling of history, this sharing of pain, so that we can all understand each other better. We must learn about history so that we can learn from it and thereby make better decisions today and on future days. At least that is the hope. Though we cannot change the pain of the past, we can seek to not cause that pain again. The big hope is to form a greater community of understanding and support.
