The ability to find meaningful work, support a family, and build a secure future should be within reach for everyone. Yet too many people face barriers to economic mobility, from limited access to quality jobs and affordable housing to challenges securing childcare, transportation, and other essential supports. Addressing these challenges requires understanding the systems that shape economic outcomes and identifying practical pathways to greater opportunity. Through research, leadership development, and strategic convenings, The Riley Institute works to advance solutions that expand economic opportunity and strengthen communities.

What We Do

We bring together leaders, practitioners, researchers, and community members to address the barriers that limit economic opportunity. Through applied research, leadership development, and strategic convenings, we help identify practical solutions that strengthen pathways to economic mobility.

How We Do It

We believe lasting progress requires collaboration across sectors and perspectives. By connecting decision-makers with research, real-world expertise, and the voices of those closest to community challenges, we help communities better understand complex issues and advance solutions grounded in evidence and experience.

Why Trust Us

For more than two decades, The Riley Institute has worked alongside leaders and organizations across South Carolina to address some of the state’s most pressing challenges. Our statewide network, nonpartisan approach, and deep connections to communities, practitioners, and subject-matter experts enable us to bring people together, foster meaningful dialogue, and help translate ideas into action.

The Riley Institute’s award-winning Diversity Leaders Initiative (DLI) equips leaders with the tools and perspectives needed to strengthen organizational performance by leveraging the unique skills, experiences, and insights of their employees. Participants explore strategies for building stronger talent pipelines, improving recruitment and retention, fostering productive workplaces, and better serving diverse clients and communities. DLI takes a nonpartisan, evidence-informed approach grounded in a simple premise: Organizations and communities are better positioned to thrive when they recognize and leverage the strengths of all people, creating greater opportunity for individuals while supporting a stronger economy. A cornerstone of the program is the Community Action Project, in which cross-sector teams collaborate to address real challenges facing South Carolina communities, applying lessons from the program to create meaningful impact.

Economic opportunity depends on more than access to jobs—it is shaped by the systems and supports that help individuals and families thrive. Through the Riley Institute Summer Experience (RISE), Furman students work with organizations across the Upstate advancing educational attainment, community development, and opportunity infrastructure, including affordable housing, childcare, transportation, and reentry services. By contributing to this work, participants help expand opportunity while developing the skills, experiences, and networks needed to become future leaders. RISE strengthens both the organizations addressing local challenges and the talent pipeline needed to sustain this work for years to come.

Through a series of awards and convenings, OneSC celebrates the leaders, partnerships, and initiatives creating pathways to economic mobility, fostering collaboration, and improving outcomes for South Carolinians. By elevating successful models and sharing lessons learned, OneSC helps communities across the state identify practical approaches to advancing prosperity and opportunity for all while inspiring continued progress statewide.
