What’s so un-American about being bilingual?

In a guest column for The Greenville News, Furman student Whitney Maness ’20 asks the question: “Why are bilinguals, and Spanish bilinguals in particular, considered un-American?” While acknowledging that the majority of Americans speak English, she wonders “why can’t two people speak their native language to one another in a personal conversation without encountering prejudice or discrimination?” Maness is a Spanish and communication studies major from Rock Hill.
