Newsweek spoke to Furman University’s Danielle Vinson about a poll from AP-NORC that gauges public sentiment toward President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump and which candidate might be a greater threat to democracy. The poll showed that 54 percent of Americans believe electing Trump would weaken democracy, compared to 48 percent who believe that re-electing the incumbent would weaken democracy. Vinson, a professor of politics and international affairs, said stirring up fear and anger amongst the electorate is one way to bring people to the polls. She suggested that a strategy of turning the focus on Trump as the greater threat could help Biden draw voters’ attention away from high grocery prices. An argument for Biden as the greater threat may appeal to only some hardcore Trump supporters, she said. The State also published the Newsweek story.
