Elizabeth “True” DePaoli, a Furman University junior, writes an op-ed for the SC Daily Gazette about soaring childcare costs and the importance of programs like Head Start, which serves over 750,000 low-income children up to 5 years old with early education, nutrition and health services. Citing statistics from ReadyNation and other sources, DePaoli says, “childcare programs must be recognized as economic infrastructure” and “affordable childcare is not a handout. It is an important investment in our workforce, our economy and our children’s futures.”

DePaoli, originally from Columbia, South Carolina, interned with the Institute for Child Success through the Riley Institute Summer Experience (RISE). She is majoring in business administration with a concentration in entrepreneurship and a minor in poverty studies.
