Now: Finding a Career Takes Passion and Drive
When I came to Furman as a first-year student, I was undecided about my major and career. I did not know what I wanted to do after graduation or what my career path would look like, but I knew I enjoyed being creative. I love drawing and thinking with my hands, and have for years. I realized I should do what I love, leading me to the Studio Art and Communication Studies departments at Furman.
During my junior year, I became interested in the graphic design courses offered. I enjoyed the digital and creative aspect, knowing I have the talent for it. I wanted to pursue it as a career after Furman, but I did not feel ready. I had limited experience and skills in this field, as I was late to decide.
The Studio Art Department promoted its master’s program involving graphic design, marketing, communications and business principles, also known as the Master of Arts in Strategic Design. I talked to a few former students in the program and Furman faculty, including Dr. Kylie Fisher, assistant professor of art history. They gave me the confidence to apply and to further decide that I wanted to get my master’s in design. The program felt like a perfect fit for what I wanted to do and could help me achieve my goals.
After getting into the program and enrolling in the fall of 2023, I am thankful for my decision to stay at Furman and further my education. I have learned a lot within the creative field, along with gaining greater skills and experience. I also have narrowed down my career path and plan to pursue branding at a marketing agency. I believe I have the necessary skills, connections and drive to make this happen, and feel self-assured in taking the next step after graduation.
As a student at Furman, I found a career path I feel passionate about taking and am excited to see what lies ahead.
