Furman’s Center for Innovative Leadership Partners with Flatiron on Tech Education
Furman University’s Center for Innovative Leadership (CIL) is launching a series of accelerated, fully online technology certificate programs with Flatiron School, a leading provider of tech education throughout the country.
The first cohort begins July 7 with programs in five areas: cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, data science, game programming and game design. Classes will be taught by and administered through Flatiron School, with multiple entry points, from foundational courses for people new to tech to advanced modules for experienced professionals looking to upgrade their skills. Class lengths vary, but they’re designed to equip students with in-demand tech skills in months rather than years. More information is available at tech-ed.furman.edu.
“South Carolinaʼs tech sector is gaining momentum, and that growth depends on people,” said Garrett Stern, the CIL’s executive director of Leadership and Professional Education. “Our partnership with Flatiron allows Furman to support the state’s tech talent ecosystem at scale, helping organizations close skills gaps while creating pathways for professionals entering high-demand roles that are shaping the future of work in South Carolina.”
Given the Upstate region of South Carolina’s strong automotive and logistics industries, Stern sees significant opportunities for training and professional education around AI, supply chain and manufacturing tech. The Flatiron approach fits the CIL’s mission to equip organizations and professionals with the skills, insights and strategies needed to lead in a rapidly evolving world, he said.
“Each program balances theoretical foundations with hands-on projects that mirror real-world challenges. This practical approach ensures graduates not only master essential technical skills but also develop the problem-solving abilities and professional confidence needed to thrive in a competitive tech market,” Stern said.
The online programs combine the convenience of remote learning with the rigor associated with in-person instruction. “Instructors are at the top of their game and bring real industry experience to the table,” Stern said.
Participants will also receive ongoing support from a dedicated Flatiron School student services team for academic assistance, motivation or guidance through challenges. Comprehensive career support services, including one-on-one mentoring, resume workshops, mock interviews and personalized job search strategies, are also available.
Flatiron School reports helping launch more than 20,000 tech careers since 2012, with graduates working for companies such as Apple, Google, IBM, Microsoft, Meta, BuzzFeed, Spotify, Vox, Kickstarter, The New York Times, Citibank and others.
