Furman students come together to help with food insecurity around Greenville
Furman University took to the grocery aisles in recent weeks to combat some of the food insecurity that is affecting many homes throughout the Upstate of South Carolina.
On Nov. 12, the Heller Service Corps, along with the Student Athlete Advisor Committee and the Religious Council, hosted Rise Against Hunger at Furman’s Mickel Tennis Center. More than 200 student volunteers came together that evening to pack more than 3,000 meals for residents of remote communities around the Greenville area.
From Nov. 3-14 the Student League for Black Culture collected nonperishable, self-stable items able to provide single, complete and easy-to-prepare meals at the Center for Interpersonal Connections office in Blackwell Hall.
Then, on Nov. 15 before the Paladins football game versus Virginia Military Institute, hundreds of fans came together for Dins Do Good: Stuff the Truck, an effort led by the Furman Student Government Association to stuff a Furman Police Department truck with nonperishable goods collected by fans attending the game. All donations collected went to the Harvest Hope Food Bank in Greenville.
