Lyn Riddle of The State gives readers a brief history of Furman University in her story about the university’s aesthetic draw. She cites an article that appeared in Architectural Digest placing Furman in an unranked list of 64 universities lauded for campus beauty. Riddle takes readers from Furman’s original home in Edgefield, South Carolina, to its downtown Greenville site, and to the current Greenville location where ground was broken in 1953. She points out several landmarks including Place of Peace, Asia Garden, Janie Earle Furman Rose Garden, the signature bell tower, and Furman Lake (aka Swan Lake) as well as some lesser-known facts about campus.
