In an article appearing in The Greenville News, Furman University’s David Fleming weighed in on U.S. Representative Nancy Mace and her official entry into the fray for the South Carolina gubernatorial republican primary. Fleming, a professor of politics and international affairs, commented on the results of a republican poll gauging name recognition and approval among the five GOP candidates. While it’s still very early in the primary conversation, Fleming said Mace is attracting name recognition, which is important in early polling. He also added that voters will look for a “strong, conservative candidate, but the most right-wing candidate doesn’t always win.” He said, ultimately, voters want a functional government whose leaders are “looking out for them” and those who are providing a “positive message for the future.”
