The U.S. Department of Education is making changes to its Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) system, the tool for determining eligibility for federal, state and institutional student aid. The retooling will ultimately streamline the aid application process, but for now, the changes, which launched Dec. 31, are causing lengthy wait times, screen loading issues and errors in FAFSA submissions. WSPA News7 turned to Furman University’s Emily Schuck, vice president for enrollment management, to explain the delays and how the university has prepared for the shift by adjusting timelines. Schuck is telling students and families to complete the FAFSA when they can – the sooner, the better. The story was picked up by KSNF (NBC) in Joplin, Missouri, and WGN-AM radio in Chicago.
