Ahead of President Donald Trump’s campaign stop in the Upstate last week, WYFF News 4 turned to Furman University’s Danielle Vinson for her take. Vinson, a Furman alum and professor of politics and international affairs, said the visit was important to rally Republican support in a tight midterm race between Democrat Annie Andrews and Republican candidate Darline Graham.

“I think they’re a bit worried about republican turnout and enthusiasm in this election,” Vinson said. “The polls are suggesting that it’s going to be a good year for Democrats. That can easily depress turnout when those polls are that close. You want somebody who can motivate the base, because in South Carolina, that’s really a key here. If she (Graham) can motivate the base, that gives her a built-in advantage because it’s such a red state. So, he (Trump) is here to motivate the base.”
