A flurry of media outlets ran news about the $10 million donation to Furman University from Congressman David Trone ’77 and wife June Trone in support mental health and Jewish student organization Hillel. The gift, of which $8.5 million is earmarked for expanded mental health facilities, programs and staff, makes Trone one of Furman’s largest living donors. The remaining $1.5 million will create the Hillel Endowment Fund to provide permanent support to expand and enhance the Furman Hillel for a more robust Jewish life for all students and the broader community.

The news appeared on FOX Carolina and WYFF News 4, and in The Greenville News, GoUpstate, The Post and Courier Greenville, SCBizNews, Greenville Journal, Greenville Business Magazine, GVL Today (see numbers section), Philanthropy News Digest, Chronicle of Philanthropy and UpstateBizSC, among other sources.

David Trone is a Democratic representative from Maryland (6th Congressional District) and is a member of the Furman Board of Trustees. Before receiving an MBA from The Wharton School of Business at The University of Pennsylvania, he studied business, English, and political science at Furman.
