Confirmed case of measles on campus; no indication of widespread exposure
Furman University has been notified of a confirmed case of measles involving an individual affiliated with the university. The university is monitoring one additional suspected case. The confirmed individual has isolated per DPH requirements. The university is conducting contact tracing and notifying individuals who may have been exposed, in accordance with DPH guidelines and in close coordination with Prisma Health.
At this time, there is no indication of widespread exposure. Individuals identified as possible contacts who may need to quarantine will be notified directly.
A person infected with measles is contagious four days before and after a rash begins. Quarantine for measles is required for exposed individuals without documented immunity and lasts for 21 days after last exposure per DPH guidelines. If a person without documented immunity receives a dose of MMR vaccine within 72 hours after last exposure, they do not have to quarantine.
According to the most recent data from the Earle Student Health Center, over 99% of Furman students have provided proof of immunity.
