TIME magazine turned to Furman University’s Brent Nelsen for his take on President Trump’s endorsement of Darline Graham Nordone for the South Carolina Senate seat vacated by the sudden passing of her brother, Lindsey Graham. Nelsen, the Jane Fishburne Hipp Professor of Politics and International Affairs, said the vote of confidence might be enough to turn the candidate to a frontrunner in the Aug. 11 special election. Nelsen said that while Graham Nordone’s loyalty to Trump represents a “superpower,” her dearth of experience in public office could be her undoing. Nelsen added that name recognition for other candidates in the fray is essential in a short campaign window.
