Furman University is one of only 50 libraries across the country to host traveling exhibition, “Americans and the Holocaust.” Presented by the American Library Association and the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, the exhibition is now open in the atrium of the James B. Duke Library. WYFF News 4 was on hand for the opening reception, which took place Friday, March 24. FOX Carolina’s Zach Prelutsky also spoke to Melinda Menzer, chair and professor of English, ahead of Friday’s event.

Menzer’s grandfather was able to flee the Holocaust and come to America. “When I think of all that this country has done for my family, and what a fantastic opportunity it was for us to come here, to be Americans, to be proud citizens of this country …, she reflected. “I am at the same time saddened to think that his brothers and sisters, their children, my father’s little cousins – didn’t have that opportunity,” she added. FOX spoke to Caroline Mills, director of Furman University libraries, who said, “I think this is a great way of creating empathy and educating those students to feel like they can make a difference.”

The exhibition is on display through April 25 during regular library hours.
