Hanaa Khan ’28 writes opinion piece about penny sales tax

Hanaa Khan, a junior at Furman University, has written an opinion piece in The Greenville News in favor of a proposed penny sales tax for Greenville residents. The tax, which will appear on the ballot this November, has the potential to raise more than $510 million over eight years to fund road and infrastructure projects as well as provide property tax relief to residents.

“For just a small amount per purchase, Greenville residents have the opportunity to raise vital funds in support of critical infrastructure projects that will have a direct effect on their quality of life and ability to travel about the city,” Khan wrote. “Further, it will also shift some of the burden of keeping Greenville accessible and traversable through taxing the tourists it draws.”

Khan, a politics and international affairs major, worked with Greenville City Council member Tina Belge as part of The Riley Institute’s RISE internship program over the summer. A subscription is required to access the article.
