Furman University’s Brad Harmon contributes an article to Insights for College Transitions about The Furman Advantage, a four-year approach to higher education that includes the award-winning Pathways Program for undergraduate years one and two, and Purposeful Pathways for years three and four. Harmon, a 1997 Furman alumnus and assistant dean for the First-Year and Second-Year Experience, looks at the efficacy of the programs, comparing outcomes and attitudes before and after full scale implementation. In one of the more dramatic shifts revealed for Purposeful Pathways, 56.2% of juniors agreed to the statement, “Furman is passionate about the long-term success of its students,” in fall 2019 (pre-pandemic) versus 74.8% of juniors who agreed in fall 2023.

Insights for College Transitions is a resource that emphasizes evidence-based strategies for practitioner-scholars who support first-year students and students in transition inside and outside the classroom. A free subscription on the site is required to view the content.
