A new book produced by The Riley Institute at Furman University and W. Robert Saffold gets a ringing endorsement from Andy Brack, editor and publisher of Statehouse Report. “A People’s Movement” tells the story of how Furman alumnus and former Gov. Richard W. Riley and a coalition of state and local leaders pushed through a penny tax for educational improvement during his second term in the 1980s.

Brack highlights many of the “plays” Riley employed to help move South Carolina out of generational underachievement in public education – strategies that can be applied to any legislative initiative.
