DEI campus conversations and information sessions

As we build an inclusive campus that fosters belonging, members of our community have come together to identify several topics for information sessions and conversations. Those sessions are listed below. We will communicate consistently with the community, sharing updates and progress on initiatives.

Our goal for these sessions is to lay the groundwork for strengthening community relationships by building skills in interpersonal dialogue and facilitation while at the same time creating a blueprint for engaging with differences in thought, ideologies and beliefs.

Spring Inclusive Community Initiatives

  • Information Session: Campus Safety, April 4, 1 – 2:30 p.m., Watkins Room
  • Dialogue opportunities for faculty and staff
  • Community Agreement conversations
  • Dialogue series:
    • Living our values even when its’s challenging
    • The meaning of academic freedom and freedom of expression
    • How do we define harm and support those who have been harmed

Listening sessions and focus groups on Belonging and the Climate Survey

Student Dins Dialogue (Sessions) 

  • November 7: No Justice and No Peace: What is Justice?, 5-6:30 p.m., Watkins North Wing
  • November 16: Fundamentals of Intergroup Dialogue, 5-6:30 p.m., Trone 208

Community Conversation (November 16, 3-4:30 p.m., Burgiss Theater)

  • Opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to connect and engage with the concepts of: What is community, how do we foster community after controversy, and how do we acknowledge different communities?

Communicating and Managing Crises Information Session (December 1, 3-4:30 p.m., Burgiss Theater)

  • Session designed to provide students, faculty and staff with information about how Furman manages and communicates crises.

Restorative Practice Training (December 8-9)

  • 30 members of campus will be selected from the Senior Administration Team, DEI Committee, SGA, Dins Dialogue, and SDC to be trained as restorative practice facilitators.

Information Session: Bias Incident Report, Feb. 15, 2:30 – 4 p.m., Burgiss Theatre

Learning Session with Dr. Kathy Obear. Co-Creating Equitable, Inclusive Campus Environments: Our Roles and Responsibilities as Staff, Faculty, and Administrators. In this engaging conversation, participants will explore the dilemmas and challenges they face as change-makers as we identify strategies to create greater equity and inclusion on campus. Session for faculty and staff is Wednesday, Feb. 22, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Watkins Room. Please contact Franklin Ellis at franklin.ellis@furman.edu to register. Lunch will be provided. The student CLP session is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 21, 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., Johns 101

Information Session: The CLP process, selection, changes and accountability, Thursday, March 2, 2:30 – 4 p.m., Burgiss Theatre.
