Furman has been certified as StormReady by the National Weather Service. Furman is the only institution of higher education in the Upstate to achieve the certification and one of only two universities in the Western Carolinas with the StormReady title.

The StormReady status is a result of work by the Furman Police Department led by John Milby. “I am confident our partnership with the National Weather Service and Greenville County Emergency Management will translate into increased safety for our students, faculty, staff and visitors,” Milby said.

StormReady uses a grassroots approach to help communities develop plans to handle all types of extreme weather – from tornadoes to winter storms. The program encourages communities to take a new, proactive approach to improving local hazardous weather operations by providing emergency managers with clear-cut guidelines on how to improve their hazardous weather operations.
