While driving to work on Friday, Aug. 24, Furman Police Lieutenant Victor Rivas was struck by a stolen pick-up truck on White Horse Road.

Rivas’ car was destroyed in the accident, and he sustained substantial injuries. He remains in the hospital, suffering from multiple fractures to his face, clavicle, wrist and ribs.

The driver of the stolen car fled on foot following the accident, and has not yet been identified.

“Fortunately, Victor was wearing his seatbelt and his vehicle was equipped with front and side airbags, which likely saved his life,” said Furman Chief of Police John Milby. “Victor is facing a lengthy recovery, and we welcome the prayers and support of the university community.”
