Storey awarded Visiting Fellowship at Princeton

Furman University professor Benjamin Storey has received a one-year Visiting Fellowship with the Department of Politics at Princeton University for the 2016-2017 academic year.

Dr. Storey is an associate professor of political science and co-director of Furman’s Tocqueville Program. His Fellowship at Princeton is sponsored by the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions.

Storey will use his Fellowship to work on a book entitled Know Thyself.  He says, “Since Socrates made it his motto, the Delphic injunction to know thyself has been at the heart of the West’s philosophic, literary and religious traditions. It is the most personal and necessary of inquiries; every college student encounters it in his or her efforts to decide what to major in, whom to date, or whether to attend graduate school.

“At the same time, the serious seeker of self-knowledge must ask the most fundamental and enduring human questions—questions about God, death, justice, love, the self, the soul, and much else. I cannot imagine anything more satisfying to think about.”

Storey’s book project grew out of a First-Year Seminar course, also called “Know Thyself,” which he has taught at Furman for the past five years. He developed the course with the support of a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities’ “Enduring Questions” program.

The James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions in the Department of Politics at Princeton is dedicated to exploring enduring questions of American constitutional law and Western political thought.

Storey has taught in Furman’s Department of Political Science for 11 years. Prior joining the Furman faculty, he received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago’s Committee on Social Thought, and his bachelor’s in history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
