Until very recently, Turkey represented the state of the art in the Middle East and the Muslim world as far as democracy is considered. But as the expectation was building for the final push of democratization with a new constitution centered on liberties and pluralism following the 2011 parliamentary elections, reforms were stalled and hopes of a new constitution were left unfulfilled. Furman political science professor Kadir Yildirim, a native of Turkey, wrote about the nation’s latest democratic efforts in an Aug. 8 op-ed for The Greenville News.
