Student speaking to a professor

Summer Connections

Furman University’s Cothran Center for Vocational Reflection is offering a fun and inspiring nine-day residential program for incoming freshmen.

Each summer, we gather a group of thoughtful, mature, and open-minded students who are willing to be stretched beyond their individual comfort zones. Guided by experienced Furman teachers and mentors and stimulated by new friends of different backgrounds, you will learn to be more appreciative of your own “life stories” as you discover that discernment of personal vocation yields authenticity and fulfillment.

Camp takes place during June 20-28, 2019.

Space is limited and the priority deadline for applications is May 15, 2019.

What is a typical day?

The days vary during the week, but a typical day might include the following:

  • Morning Reflection
  • Community Service
  • Theology Class
  • Enneagram Workshop
  • Evening Activity
  • Family Groups
  • Meals
  • Free time
How much does it cost?

Thanks to support from generous donors, the program is offered at no cost to accepted students.

Is this a religious program?

The program welcomes participants of any faith perspective and tradition. While the topic of religion naturally comes up in discussion of calling and vocation, no attempt is made to indoctrinate or change the religious beliefs of students. Students are offered ways to use their beliefs in discovery and analysis of their individual life’s goals and meanings.

What about Summer Orientation?

We recommend that all students attending Summer Connections also sign up for the Summer Orientation session immediately following the program, June 28-29. For more information, please visit the Summer Orientation page.

What have past participants said about their experiences?

“Great program that I would recommend to most incoming freshmen. It really helps build a foundation for freshman year.”

“This program was amazing. I can truly say that I learned more about myself as a whole as well as caring about other people.”

“The service to the community, the discussions, and activities were all that I hoped they would be. I really liked the mix of fun and serious stuff that we did; our days were full, but not exhausting.”

“I’m very grateful for this program. It was invaluable and will help me throughout the next four years at Furman and even after I graduate.”
