Update on Furman Athletics, Purple and White Week
Dear Campus Community,
We wanted to share with you an update on Furman Athletics and how we are planning to safely resume scrimmages and other campus activities for Homecoming, which we announced this morning, and as teams prepare to resume competition in late November.
As a result of the Southern Conference’s decision in August to cancel fall competition, the traditional championship season for fall sports was moved to the spring, and activities were limited to team practices, small group and individual workouts, and strength and conditioning.
As a Division I program, Furman Athletics must adhere to NCAA policies, including the NCAA Core Principles of Resocialization of Collegiate Sport regarding COVID-19 policies and procedures, which has served as a guide in helping Furman Athletics take a phased approach to returning.
These policies include enhanced COVID-19 testing protocols for student-athletes, as well as daily screenings and temperature checks before all activities. Each team is supervised and monitored by Furman Athletics’ Sports Medicine Center and medical staff. These protocols, trainings and practices are closely supervised by coaches, administrators and Sports Medicine staff, and help to protect the health and safety of our student-athletes, as well as our coaching staff and campus community.
The status of intramurals and club sports, which are coordinated by Student Life and do not have the same extensive supervision and protocols, remains the same. See the Furman Focused site for details regarding which club sports are able to hold competitions and practices and those that remain on hold.
While the Southern Conference 2020-2021 competition schedules for all sports are still under review by the conference and the NCAA, the SoCon Cross Country championship will take place on November 21 at Mercer University, and the Men’s and Women’s Basketball seasons will begin on November 25. The other fall sports will take place in the spring.
All sports will continue to follow NCAA and Southern Conference requirements in regard to testing frequency, isolation and quarantine, as well as masking, distancing and cleaning requirements, in addition to the protocols required by the Paladin Promise.
Purple and White Week Activities
To help celebrate Homecoming (see this morning’s announcement) and provide students an opportunity to cheer on the Paladins before their seasons resume, Furman will hold a Purple and White Week featuring in-person scrimmages, virtual events and the weekly Lunch and Learn. The week of festivities will kick off on Saturday, Oct. 17, and culminate on Saturday, Oct. 24, with Women’s Soccer and Football scrimmages.
Attendance to the in-person scrimmages is limited to students living on campus, commuters and student-athlete family members, and the events will have limited capacity to allow for adequate physical distancing. Some events require tickets (see below).
Saturday, Oct. 17
Monday, Oct. 19
Tuesday, Oct. 20
Wednesday, Oct. 21
Thursday, Oct. 22
Friday, Oct. 23
Saturday, Oct. 24
We invite students to show their support for our student-athletes by joining us during Purple and White Week and look forward to cheering on the Paladins when their seasons resume this winter and spring.
