Furman Focused update

Dear Campus Community,

Your well-deserved Thanksgiving break is almost here! In preparation for time off and travel, this week we share with you upcoming changes to dining hours, health and safety reminders, and free on-campus COVID-19 testing dates.

COVID-19 dashboard

There were three positive student COVID-19 cases on campus this past week, and there was one positive employee case. Thank you for your continued diligence in keeping our community healthy and safe.

The Furman Focused Dashboard was updated yesterday and will continue to be updated each Monday and Thursday. Our next Furman Focused email update is planned for Dec. 10.

Free COVID-19 testing next week

In preparation for holiday travel, Furman is partnering with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SC DHEC) to offer free COVID-19 testing in the South Chapel Lot on Nov. 21-Dec. 3, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Pre-registration is preferred as it will expedite the testing process. The link to register will be available on the Furman Focused homepage today.

Masking reminder at basketball games

Masks are required at all basketball games. Please wear your mask (when not eating or drinking) in this crowded, indoor space.

Flu shots for students

There are confirmed flu cases on campus. Students are encouraged to get a flu shot at the Earle Student Health Center. Please call 864-522-2000 or email furmanstudenthealth@prismahealth.org to schedule an appointment. COVID-19 and flu symptoms are similar, so the ESHC will test for both when students are symptomatic.

COVID-19 booster shots

Information about COVID-19 booster shots is available on the SC DHEC website. While the Earle Student Health Center is not equipped to offer the booster shot at this time, individuals may use SC DHEC’s VaxLocator website to access vaccine locations.

Federal mandate regarding vaccination of employees

The federal government is mandating that certain organizations require either that their workers are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by Jan. 4 or that unvaccinated employees test for COVID-19 at least once a week and wear face coverings while on the job. This would include student workers.

Our planning and leadership teams are reviewing this mandate, including tracking it as it makes its way through the federal court system, and we will provide more information in our Dec. 10 communication. In the meantime, we continue to strongly encourage all faculty and staff to be vaccinated.

We are closely monitoring the number of positive cases in our campus community to determine the appropriateness of any adjustments or contingencies. If you have any questions, please email furman.focused@furman.edu.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Sincerely,

The COVID Response Committee
