LIFE & Palmetto Fellows Scholarship STEM Enhancement

Scholarship Enhancements are awarded to eligible students majoring in approved mathematics and science programs beginning in their second/sophomore year based on their date of initial college enrollment (freshman are not eligible for Enhancement funds). LIFE and Palmetto Fellows Scholarship and Scholarship Enhancements funds must be used toward the cost-of-attendance at an eligible four-year institution in South Carolina.

  • A student must meet ALL of the eligibility requirements for a LIFE or Palmetto Fellows Scholarship and be a recipient of LIFE or Palmetto Fellows Scholarship funds. Please refer to our LIFE or Palmetto Fellows Scholarship section for eligibility requirements for both scholarships.
  • In addition, the student must be a declared math or science major by the beginning of the second academic year of college enrollment.
  • In order to be eligible for the LIFE or Palmetto Fellows Scholarship Enhancement, students must complete the minimum level of instruction in approved mathematics and science courses by the end of their freshman/first year of college enrollment. Freshmen must complete at least fourteen credit hours of instruction in mathematics or life and physical science or a combination of both.
  • Students may use the following to meet the fourteen credit hour requirement: 1) credit hours earned while in high school (dual enrollment); 2) credit hours earned the summer following high school graduation (for Palmetto Fellows, the summer must be immediately following high school graduation); 3) exempted credit hours (CLEP, AP, IB), and; 4) Pass/Fail courses with a grade of “Pass” only.
  • For Palmetto Fellows, these hours are only acceptable for Enhancement purposes and cannot be used to meet the annual credit hour requirement for renewing the underlying Scholarship. In addition, remedial/developmental, continuing education and non-degree credit coursework cannot be used to meet the specified minimum level of instruction in mathematics and science.

The following majors & courses (with these suffix’s) are approved majors at Furman University for the STEM Enhancement:

  • CSC- Computer & Information Sciences
  • CSC- Information Technology
  • PEG- Dual -Degree Applied Physics (was named Pre-Engineering prior to 2021)
  • BIO- Biology, General
  • MTH- Mathematics
  • NSC- Neuroscience
  • CHM- Chemistry, General
  • EES- Earth & Environmental Science
  • PHY- Physics, General
  • HSC-  Health Sciences

Award Amount for LIFE Scholarship Enhancement:

  • Eligible sophomores, juniors, and seniors may receive up to $7,500 ($5,000 LIFE Scholarship award combined with $2,500 additional Enhancement funds).

Award amount for Palmetto Fellows Scholarship Enhancement:

  • Eligible sophomores, juniors, and seniors may receive up to $10,000 ($7,500 Palmetto Fellows Scholarship award combined with additional $2,500 Enhancement funds) per year.

Note: The LIFE or Palmetto Fellows Enhancement Scholarship in combination with all other scholarships and grants may not exceed the cost of attendance as defined by Title IV regulations. These particular scholarships are considered the last gift aid on an award offer and will be reduced first after all self-help (Federal, private loans, and/or Federal work study) has been reduced and cancelled.

  • The LIFE or Palmetto Fellows Scholarship Enhancement is credited to your student account to satisfy any charges. If all tuition and fees are satisfied and you are enrolled full-time, excess aid is refunded to the student and can be used for any college-related expenses, including off-campus housing.
  • The LIFE or Palmetto Fellows Scholarship Enhancement is typically available during the Fall and Spring semesters.  If you are participating in a study abroad program that is not affiliated with Furman, you will not be able to use your scholarship eligibility for that semester.  Please contact the Office of Financial Aid with any questions.
