Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Spotlight
Associate Professor Jeff Michno and Professor Angelica Lozano-Alonso (MLL) recently featured an innovative approach to language and cultural education in their article Combining Study Abroad and the On-Campus Experience to Enhance Language and Cultural Learning in Innovation in Language Learning and Teaching. This creative study connected Spanish majors on Study Away in Madrid with their on-campus peers, creating a unique collaborative learning environment that highlights the unique outcomes of The Furman Advantage. The study design involved students conducting ethnographic field observations and cross-cultural reflections in both locations. Results demonstrate significant progress in advanced-level language use and the development of global citizenship skills. The research exemplifies the innovative spirit of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, improved learning for students, and possibilities for enhancing future Study Away endeavors.
