Deliberative Pedagogy–Teaching the (Process of) Controversy Lunch & Learn

November 14, 2025 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

Friday, November 14, 2025
12:30-1:30 p.m.
Trustees’ Dining Room (Daniel Dining Hall)

Instructors don’t need to present “both sides” of important controversies, but we would do well to prepare students for a discourse culture of multiple reasonable positions and identity pluralism. In this session, Brandon Inabinet (Communication Studies and Faculty Council Chair) will review some of Furman’s statements and policies that center norms of discourse and share how these can leverage classroom deliberative pedagogy. Brandon also has ready to use resources to share, including deliberation processes, community agreements, and example deliberation guides. Participants will learn to guide students as facilitators of deliberation, which puts them in the driver’s seat for healthy discussion in your courses.

Lunch will be provided, so please arrive a few minutes early to make your meal selections if you are able.

To register for this workshop, complete the FDC’s Fall 2025 Registration form.
