Hello, Potential Dins! My name is Kobby Frempong, a sophomore international student from Ghana. Today, we will be dissecting the conundrums of college applications and what it means to put together a sterling application worthy of admission.

Embarking on the journey of college application is an exciting and sometimes overwhelming experience. As you consider Furman University, a place known for its academic excellence and vibrant campus life, we want to offer you some valuable insights and tips to help you navigate the application process smoothly.

Hence, in the past week, I have collated some thoughts and ideas from current students and academicians on what it takes to portray excellence in your college applications. Now, whether you are a prospective freshman or transfer student, these tips and tricks will help you put your best foot forward and increase your chances of becoming a part of the Furman family.

Start Early and Stay Organized:

“Of course, one of the first and most crucial tips for a successful Furman application is to start early. The application process can be time-consuming, and it is essential to give yourself ample time to gather materials, write essays, and complete all necessary forms. Create a detailed checklist with deadlines and requirements specific to Furman University to ensure you don’t miss anything” – William Jepson, Class of 2026.

Explore Your Passion:

“At Furman, we value students who are passionate about their interests. However, you do not have to be set on a particular major when crafting your application. Just think about your passions, hobbies, and extracurricular activities. Showcase your commitments, whether it’s music, sports, volunteering, or academic endeavors, and let your ingenuity will speak for you. Be sure to include any leadership roles or significant achievements related to these activities”, – Ellis Edinkrah, Class of 2025.

Craft an Authentic Personal Statement:

“Your personal statement is an opportunity to tell us your story. Be authentic and genuine in sharing your experiences, challenges, and aspirations. Don’t be afraid to open up and let your personality shine through your writing. Explain why Furman University aligns with your goals and values and how you can contribute to our community”, Yaseen Echeki, SGA Vice President, Class of 2025.

Highlight Academic Achievements:

Furman University prioritizes academic excellence, so make sure to emphasize your academic achievements. Share your GPA, class rank, and standardized test scores, and provide context if necessary. If you’ve taken advanced courses or participated in academic competitions, be sure to mention them.

Strong Letters of Recommendation:

“Choose recommenders who know you well and can speak to your character, work ethic, and potential as a Furman student”, Ms. Alison Diaz, Pathways Advisor. It is a good idea to provide your recommenders with information about your goals and aspirations, so they can tailor their letters to align with your application. If you have exceptional work in these areas, do not hesitate to submit them. However, only include materials that truly showcase your talents and dedication.

Visit Campus Virtually or In-Person:

We do acknowledge that it is not always possible to visit campus in person, therefore, we encourage you to take advantage of our virtual resources. Follow us on our Instagram page @furmanadmissions to get a sense of what Furman has to offer. If you have the opportunity, visiting in person can provide valuable insights into our community and culture.

Proofread and Edit Carefully:

Attention to detail matters in your application. Review your essays, personal statement, and any written materials carefully for grammatical errors and typos. Consider having a trusted friend, family member, or teacher review your application as well.

Apply for Scholarships and Financial Aid:

Furman University offers various merit-based scholarships and financial aid grant options (FAFSA) to support students in achieving their educational goals. Be sure to explore these opportunities which range from merit scholarships to athletics, music, and ROTC scholarships, and submit any required materials if there are any to turn in by the deadlines. Financial aid can significantly impact your ability to attend Furman, so don’t miss out on potential funding.

As you embark on your college application journey and consider Furman University, keep in mind that we are eager to get to know you as an individual. Be authentic, passionate, and thorough in your application, and use these tips and tricks to guide you through the process. At Furman, we value diversity, intellectual curiosity, and a commitment to excellence, so let your unique qualities shine. We look forward to receiving your application and welcoming you into our community of scholars, leaders, and change-makers. Go Future Dins!
