Study Away Opportunities
Furman’s study away programs are designed and led by Furman faculty, ensuring that you continue to receive a quality Furman education while traveling off-campus.
May Experience
Sociology majors have the chance to participate in our May Experience program each year. All May Experience programs give students a chance to explore areas not covered in the regular curriculum and provide opportunities for students to dig deeper into areas not previously considered. Past programs have focused on the sociology of Harry Potter, statistics through sports, sociology of dance, and public sociology. These programs may include off-campus trips.
MXP 202 – Science and Culture of Happiness
An examination of happiness from the lens of the social sciences. The emphasis will be on both social policies and individual practices associated with well-being. Class discussions, frequent reflective writing, and participation activities known to increase happiness will be required. This program is based in Copenhagen, Denmark.
EDU 265 – International Perspectives on Education
This study away May Experience course provides in-depth exploration of education systems across the world. Previous destinations include Finland, Czech Republic, Italy, New Zealand, and Australia. While the course focuses on education and in-person school visits, students simultaneously engage with material about the social, political, historical, and cultural roots that shape educational practices in different contexts. A sociological lens is especially pertinent when considering educational/social policies and the interplay between micro, meso, and macro level forces that influence schooling. Students in this course hear firsthand accounts from teachers, administrators, students, parents, and policy experts as we carefully consider the role of education in society.
