Reflecting on verdict, continued need to pursue equity

April 20, 2021

Dear Furman Community,

The world has learned that a jury has found former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin guilty of the death last May of George Floyd. The trial has been one of the most observed legal proceedings in recent memory.

Regardless of the outcome of the case, some truths were going to remain. The case has, once again, brought forward questions about systemic racial inequities in our country. Such inequities must be challenged if our nation is to live up to its promise of liberty and justice for everyone.

As a university community, we must support the voices of those who struggle to be heard and make sure those who are underrepresented are recognized, respected, and have a place at our table. Additionally, we must seek to understand without prejudice those who are hurting.

The video and testimonial evidence from the trial was heart-wrenching, and emotions are understandably still running very high. Students, if you feel you need to talk with someone, you may contact the Furman Counseling Center at 864-294-3031 or the Office of Spiritual Life at 864-294-2133.

It is vital that our community continue to pursue and embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion, not only on our campus, but wherever we find ourselves in the world.

Warmly,

Elizabeth Davis
President
