Joseph Vaughn Day Event on Friday

January 24, 2022

Dear Campus Community,

This year, January 29, the day when Joseph Vaughn enrolled as Furman University’s first Black undergraduate student nearly 60 years ago, falls on Saturday. In order to celebrate this occasion with as many people as possible, we will observe Joseph Vaughn Day on Friday, January 28.

Please join me as we gather on the steps of Daniel Chapel at 12:15 p.m. Lillian Brock Flemming ’71 M’75 H’14, a close friend of Joseph Vaughn’s, will lead us in a walk of honor from the chapel to the Joseph Vaughn Plaza, beginning at 12:30 p.m.

On the plaza, the program will include the confirmation of an honorary degree on Pearlie Harris M’83 and comments from Asha Marie Larson-Baldwin ’22, the president of Furman’s Student Government Association.

We have invited members of the community to join us and may have a large crowd, so please follow COVID protocols, including wearing a mask outdoors if you are not able to physically distance.

I hope to see you Friday.

Warmly,

Elizabeth Davis
President
