Anti-LGBTQIA+ bias incidents

October 28, 2021

Dear Campus Community,

Furman University has received reports that anti-LGBTQIA+ slurs and discriminatory comments were written on a white board in South Housing during the past couple of weeks. Harassing someone because of their sexual orientation or gender identity is discriminatory and is antithetical to our shared values of trust and mutual respect for all people. This behavior is unacceptable at Furman.

We condemn all acts that communicate hatred and intolerance. Anti-LGBTQIA+ slurs are deeply hurtful to all, but especially to our LGBTQIA+ students and colleagues.

Furman Police are investigating the incidents, which occurred over fall break and late in the evening of Friday, October 22, or early in the morning of Saturday, October 23.  Anyone with information about these incidents is encouraged to call Furman Police at 864-294-2111. Information may also be shared anonymously through the LiveSafe app.

Hostile acts towards others are serious offenses, as outlined in the Student Handbook. A pattern of inappropriate conduct directed at someone on the basis of sex that is severe, pervasive and objectively offensive could also constitute sexual harassment that would be addressed under Furman’s Sexual Misconduct Policy.

To report incidences of bias, visit the Bias Incident Report page. To learn more, visit the Bias Incident Response and Support page.

Furman Pride Alliance is a student organization that provides a safe space for students to feel free to express their gender and sexual identifications in a non-judgmental environment and receive support from other students. In addition, a number of online organizations, including The Trevor Project and PFLAG, provide support, information and resources.

Furman is a richer, more vibrant community because we embrace and celebrate all aspects of diversity. There is no place at Furman for harassment of any kind. To the vast majority of our students, faculty and staff who work every day to make Furman a more welcoming, inclusive and respectful environment for everyone, thank you.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Davis
President
