Student’s op-ed urges empathy, civility in conversations
Just in time for this election season, Furman University student Audrey Enghauser ’26, a communication studies major who is minoring in poverty studies, offers advice for keeping discussions with friends and family members civil. In her essay published in the Greenville Journal, she recommends looking for lower-stakes opportunities for conversations with loved ones to preserve relationships. She also urges readers to treat potentially divisive topics and discussions as opportunities to learn from others by prioritizing “curiosity over being right.”
Enghauser’s op-ed was part of an annual writing competition organized by The Riley Institute at Furman University. The competition was judged by Furman staff and a representative of Community Journals, the parent company of Greenville Journal.
