Description:  The Healthcare Today Engaged Learning Program focuses on the challenges and issues facing patients, providers, and communities.  Students will learn about the roles and responsibilities of different healthcare professionals, and work to develop the competencies required to be a successful member of a healthcare team.  Students will gain a detailed understanding of the requirements and challenges in healthcare today in order to facilitate a more informed decision regarding their career choices.

Students in the Healthcare Today program are enrolled in a linked healthcare focused First Year Writing seminar course in the fall semester.  Healthcare programming continues throughout both semesters, and includes engagement with community healthcare partners, such as the Prisma Health System and the Hawkins Foundation Bioskills Training and Innovation Center.

Linked Coursework Fall Semester 2024:  FYW 1195 “Psychic Disorder and the Social Order”

This course explores how and why certain emotional states and patterns of thought become labeled pathological or disruptive.  By connecting modern health debates to their historical origins, students examine the tension between freedom and restraint that characterizes debates about psychic disorder.  Topics include the history of psychiatry, post-traumatic stress disorder, and eating disorders. This class fulfills the first-year writing seminar graduation requirement.

Program Structure:  Each semester, students will have the opportunity to engage with healthcare professionals in various fields.  This engagement will primarily occur within an invited speaker format, but can also include activity and workshop settings.  Each healthcare professional participating will highlight a characteristic, attribute, or skill associated with the core competencies, emphasizing how it is relevant to and practiced within their specific field of healthcare.

Eligibility and Application:  Incoming students interested in any area of healthcare are eligible to apply for this selective program.  For the 2024-2025 academic year, the program will be limited to 12 students.

Application Link:  Application will be available May 1, 2024.
