Dr. Caterisano has served over 35 years as a Professor of Exercise Physiology in the Department of Health Sciences. In addition to Co-authoring two books with Virginia Tech Head Strength Coach Mike Gentry ( A Chance to Win: a complete guide to physical training for football, 2004 and The Ultimate Guide to Physical Training for Football, 2013), Caterisano has written a chapter Martin Rooney's book Warrior Cardio. He has authored dozens of presentations and research papers focusing on exercise and resistance training in journals such as The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, American Journal of Sports Medicine, Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, and Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness. In 1999 Caterisano attained Fellow status in the American College of Sports Medicine (FACSM). He holds certifications by ACSM as an Exercise Test Technologist (ETT) and by NSCA as Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with Distinction (CSCS*D).

Caterisano served as Head Wrestling Coach of the varsity wrestling program at Furman (1984-1991) and for Spartanburg Methodist College (2003 – 2010). Currently he is Head Wrestling Coach at Wade Hampton High School where he coaches his son Mike. As a competitive powerlifter Dr. Caterisano has won 16 straight South Carolina state titles at the Masters level in powerlifting as well as 10 National titles in powerlifting at the Masters level. On the world stage Caterisano took Gold medals each year in the past 10 years in the World Championships in the drug-free, World Natural Powerlifting Federation (2002 – 2012). In 2007 he won two gold and one silver medal in the WNPF World Championships in 2007, leading the Furman University Powerlifting team to the team championship that year.
