Forgiveness is generally not at the top of the mind in conflict, but it is a topic in Mary Jo McInerny’s Mediation and Conflict Resolution course taught during May Experience. Conflict pervades our society, manifesting between individuals, groups, political parties, and nations, highlighting the need for skills in bridging differences. However,  this course introduces mediation as a non-adversarial approach to resolving disputes, where forgiveness can be one goal, though not always attainable. Under Ms. McInerny’s guidance, students develop skills in active listening, facilitative responses, non-verbal communication, and various mediation techniques. These techniques include brainstorming, finding mutual solutions, and drafting effective agreements. Additionally, the course explores broader conflict resolution themes, such as restorative justice and the study of forgiveness. This course supports On Discourse’s mission to teach and learn effective strategies for navigating and facilitating diverse discourses. Ms. McInerny brings over 30 years of experience as a counselor in educational, clinical, and social service settings, in addition to being a Supreme Court Certified Divorce and Family Mediator to the Furman classroom.
